Nature Immersions Glossary

New to forest bathing or curious about the language we use?

This simple glossary explains common terms you will hear in a Nature Immersions session, so you can arrive with confidence and understand the intention behind each practice.

Nature Immersions

A guided, slow immersion in nature that uses the senses to support stress relief, mental clarity, and a calmer nervous system. It is not exercise or hiking, but a restorative practice designed to help you reset through presence and connection.

Shinrin-yoku

A Japanese term often translated as forest bathing. While it began in Japan, shinrin-yoku quickly became a worldwide wellbeing movement, inspiring nature-based practices across many countries. Nature Immersions is aligned with this global approach, delivered with a modern, science-informed structure.

INFTA

The International Nature and Forest Therapy Alliance. INFTA is a global professional community that supports high standards, ethics, and continuing development in nature and forest therapy. Nature Immersions aligns with internationally recognised guiding approaches, including ANFT training and the broader global forest therapy movement.

ANFT

The Association of Nature and Forest Therapy. ANFT certifies nature therapy guides through an internationally recognised training and guiding framework. Nature Immersions sessions are guided by Christina Taylor, an ANFT certified Nature Therapy Guide.

Nature Therapy

A guided, nature-based wellbeing practice that uses sensory connection, mindful pacing, and supportive invitations to help participants reduce stress and restore attention. Nature therapy is often used interchangeably with forest bathing, with an emphasis on professional guiding standards and wellbeing outcomes.

Qigong

Qigong is a traditional Chinese mind-body practice that combines slow, flowing movement, breath regulation, and focused awareness to cultivate and balance vital energy, known as qi. Nam Wah Pai Qigong is rooted in classical lineage training and emphasises posture, structure, relaxed power, and internal awareness.

In a Nature Immersions context, gentle Qigong-inspired movements may be used to support grounding, steady breathing, and nervous system regulation, helping participants settle more deeply into the forest environment.

Sensory Invitations

Simple guided prompts that invite you to notice the natural world through sight, sound, touch, scent, and movement. Invitations are always optional, and they help shift you from thinking to sensing, which supports calmer physiology and clearer attention.

Breathwork

Gentle breathing practices used to support relaxation, improve focus, and help regulate the nervous system. In Nature Immersions, breathwork is kept simple, accessible, and grounded in the natural setting rather than high-intensity techniques.

Nervous System Regulation

The process of helping your body shift from stress-driven states into calmer, more balanced functioning. Nature immersion, gentle sensory attention, and supportive breathing can all encourage this shift, which many people experience as feeling steadier, quieter, and more at ease.

Attention Restoration

A research-backed idea that time in natural environments can help restore depleted attention and reduce mental fatigue. Many people notice improved clarity, better focus, and a calmer mind after a Nature Immersions session.

Integration

The closing phase of a session where you reflect, notice what has shifted, and gently bring the experience back into everyday life. Integration helps the benefits of forest bathing and breathwork carry forward beyond the time in the forest.
